The Challenge : Vibration Rebound

When a loudspeaker reproduces audio signals, the mechanical oscillations of its drivers induce reactive forces that propagate vibrational energy into the cabinet structure. This phenomenon, known as structural resonance, generates secondary sound waves radiated directly from the cabinet surfaces. Given the cabinet’s substantial surface area and material composition, these parasitic emissions contribute an estimated 3–7% of total acoustic output—a measurable deviation from the driver’s intended signal that degrades tonal accuracy and transient fidelity.

Simultaneously, cabinet vibrations transmit kinetic energy to the loudspeaker’s supporting surface (e.g., stands, floors, or shelves). This energy is partially reflected back into the cabinet, creating a feedback loop of resonant rebound. The interaction between incoming and reflected vibrations induces phase cancellation or reinforcement at certain frequencies, artificially attenuating or amplifying specific harmonics. The result is a loss of spectral coherence, manifesting as blurred instrument separation, smeared transients, and a "muddy" audio clarification.

Uncontrolled cabinet resonance also radiates distorted sound waves omnidirectionally, contaminating the listening environment with unwanted echoes and interference causing time-delayed reflections, reduced precision in soundstage and harmonic overtones.

Together, these mechanical and acoustic distortions compromise the integrity of the original audio signal. Even minor vibrational artifacts compound to erode the listener’s experience—diminishing the clarity, immersion, and emotional resonance that define audiophile systems.
